For Thursday, October 15, 2015:
“Writing is a job, a talent, but it’s also the place to go in your head.
It is the imaginary friend you drink your tea with in the afternoon.”
Do you find the process of writing itself comforting? I do, even — maybe especially — when writing about things that are difficult. This is true, too, when I write fiction, for I look forward to spending time with ‘my’ characters and getting to know them better.
While writing on a computer is faster and easier, I miss the days when I could compose drafts by hand (tremor makes my handwriting almost illegible at times) because it was almost as cozy as curling up with a book. Still the process is reassuring: it’s always there, always available, always a good friend.
How has writing proved to be a friend for you? If you’re not friends with your writing for some reason, try getting more familiar with it by writing as often as possible. The more you write something, anything, without worrying about how good it is or isn’t, the more comfortable it will become.
