The Prompter Room

For Tuesday, May 9, 2017:

As a writing teacher, it is my experience that if I praise a student’s strengths, the weaknesses eventually fall away.  If I focus on the weakness, the strengths, too, may wobble and even vanish.  Just as we would not give over a valuable young horse to just anybody to train, we must not give over our work to just anybody to critique …

An amateur reader can give very valid feedback.  (Remember the word ‘amateur’ comes from the verb ‘amare,’ to love.)  What you want to find in a reader is someone who loves to read and is friendly to the idea of your developing as a writer.
